Did you know that eating in Kuala Lumpur doesn’t have to be expensive if you find the right places? Almost every weekend, it’s a must for me to discover new makan places with my friends and occasionally my sister tags along. We are all about cheap eats, aren’t we? So, this week I’d like to share with you some of my favourite hangouts which offer affordable yet yummylicious meals.
1. Studio 5

Price: Nasi lemak chun-one, RM1.20
As Malaysians, we are all known for our love for nasi lemak and my sister and I are no exception. A few weeks ago, during our never-ending quest for a good bungkus of nasi lemak, we stumbled upon this humble stall along the famous Ampang Jaya stretch. The combination of fragrant coconut rice and spicy sambal will leave you wanting more. Try it for yourself and let me know your verdict.
Address:
No 5-7, Studio 5,
Gerai Statik, Jalan Kolam Air Lama,
Ampang Jaya, Kuala Lumpur, 68000.
2. Chelo’s Appam Stall

Price: Plain appam, RM1.20
Appam (Indian pancake) is perfect when it has a fluffy and soft coconut-rich center with crispy and crunchy edges. Chelo’s appam is by far the best I’ve ever had and one is never enough. Also, their excellent customer service has always elevated my dining experience. Two thumbs up!
Address:
Om Shakti Chelo’s Appam
Lorong Ara Kiri 3,
Lucky Garden,
59100 Bangsar,
Kuala Lumpur.
3. Ganga Cafe

Price: Standard thali, RM10.00
My go-to at this famous vegetarian Indian restaurant is their standard thali (Indian-style meal served on a platter). The thali set comes with a choice of 1 brown rice or 2 chapatis, 3 vegetable sides, 2 dal, rasam, papadam, and salad. I love the ambience too, and it’s always so convenient to have a quick catch up sesh with my colleagues and friends.
Address:
The Ganga Cafe
19 Lorong Kurau,
Off Jalan Riong,
Bangsar Pertama
59100 Kuala Lumpur.
4. Rayong Thai

Price: Seafood tom yum, RM12.00/small
I am a huge fan of Thai cuisine! Knew the existence of this restaurant through my sister who’s familiar with every nook and corner of Taman Danau Desa. Whenever your Thai food craving kicks in, try out their seafood tom yum. The tangy and spicy broth with loads of seafood is the best to be savoured during a rainy day. Highly recommended!
Address:
Rayong Thai

Jalan 4/109F Taman Danau Desa,
58100 Kuala Lumpur.
