Dear GoCar, What Are You Exactly?

GoCar car sharing

It’s been more than a year since GoCar has started serving Kuala Lumpur and being a car sharing company in Malaysia was nothing less than interesting. Through time, we’ve received questions like “Are you guys from Grab?” “What if someone decides to take GoCar and not return it?” or “Can I lease to you my extra car for your business?” and we thought it’s time to answer your questions on who we really are and what we stand for.

GoCar is a car sharing service in Malaysia and of course, the term car sharing seems rather foreign as the concept overlaps some features of conventional car rental services. It’s a little confusing but we assure you that you’ll not be brain-fried at the end of this naggy educational piece.

We live in an era where we own things virtually or collaboratively and have legal title to a handful of things or none. Be it a gym membership or a cheap Airbnb accommodation you’ve booked for your holiday, you don’t own the gym equipment technically or neither you own the property to sleep in, and that’s what we call a sharing economy. Car sharing, sometimes known as a car club, plays a part in the sharing economy where members have access to cars provided by the car sharing service provider and pay only for what they use. And that’s what GoCar is.

Perhaps if you’ve been staying in Europe or Australia, the concept of car sharing has been prominent and many have ditched the idea of buying a car because of accessibility and affordability. Looking deeper, we don’t think driving back and forth to the office and keeping it in the garage for the rest of the night is a smart thing to do.

Car sharing is like car rental if you’re wondering, except it’s much cooler. Car sharing and car rental are different in the sense that car sharing serves as a facility to a community in different areas and members skip the hassle of meeting a sales representative to go through pre-rental paperwork and pay an amount of deposit in contrast to renting a car. Logically, it wouldn’t be worth the hassle to go through the process of renting a car just for a few hours of shopping and often, rental rates are charged daily. Car sharing is made accessible where members may book round the clock, even wee hours in the morning and you pay only for what you use (even if it’s just for an hour!).

So to answer your questions:

“How do I use GoCar? Is there someone waiting for me at the car to pass me the keys?”

All you need to do is sign up with us, book a slot and drive! GoCar is self-service and accessing your car is seamless. Log in the GoCar app, start your rental via the app and unlock with the tap on your smartphone. As for the car keys, you will find your key in the key box located in the glove compartment of the vehicle.

And once you’re done, end the session via the app and place the keys back into the key box.  It’s that simple!

Watch the step-by-step video on how to use the GoCar app to access your car.

“So what’s included in the rate?”

For a Nissan Almera, RM14.90*/hour, insurance, 15 KM of fuel and mileage maintenance service are included. The daily and monthly rates exclude fuel.

If you need a 7-seater, book a Nissan Grand Livina instead for RM16.90*/hour or RM169*/day.

*Our rates are subject to 6% GST.

“What if my GoCar breaks down?”

Fret not! Call the emergency helpline number on the sticker located on the windscreen. A courtesy car will be provided if you’re unable to continue your journey with the same car.

“You’ve got more than 70 cars. Who get those cars cleaned?”

GoCar has a dedicated fleet team that looks into the maintenance and cleanliness of every car. There will be times where back-to-back bookings hamper cleaning efforts by the fleet team but that doesn’t mean you should drive a dirty car. If the cleanliness of the vehicle that you have booked is unsatisfactory, all you need to do is:

  1. Take pictures of the car.
  2. Send to hello@gocar.my
  3. Send it for a wash.
  4. Send us a copy of the receipt via email and give you an hour credit for your next reservation!

Car sharing adds value to communities and it’s paramount to keep the cars clean at all time so that the next user can enjoy driving a clean GoCar too! However, we understand that there will be times where you may not be able to clean up prior to returning the car, hence a cleaning charge may be levied to allocate manpower for cleaning services.

Some pro tips to help you avoid cleaning charges:

  1. Remember to clear food wrappers and empty bottles before returning GoCar.
  2. If you’re visiting the beach, do dust off sand on clothing and shoes before returning to the vehicle.
  3. Avoid driving on muddy roads. If you have to, a quick rinse after would do the job!

“What if I need to extend my reservation?”

You can conveniently extend your session via the app! However, we strongly recommend members to extend or book in advance to avoid disappointment.

“Are you guys Grab?”

No. Grab is a popular ride-sharing service, while GoCar is a car-sharing service in Malaysia. The concept of ride-sharing works similarly like a taxi where the users are chauffeured from point A to point B, and car sharing allows you to drive on your own.

“Is it safe? What if the police stop me and ask me for proof of ownership?”

Worry not! All cars are licenced vehicles and you may find the licence slip displayed on the left side of your GoCar’s windshield.

“Can I lease my extra car to GoCar to generate income?”

GoCar is not a peer-to-peer car sharing where members of the public rent out their unutilized car to another person. Car sharing is flexible but not everyone can rent out their cars or drive one without having the necessary insurance documentations as required by the law. All GoCar members are insured when driving our cars and our fleet of cars are fully licenced too!

Why risk a package of RM1,000 fine, 12 months driver’s licence suspension and a 3-month jail term under Section 90(2) of the Road Transport Act 1987 when you can drive GoCar with a peace of mind? #absolutenobrainer

  1. It sounds interesting. How can this compete with Airport car rental services? Just wondering about it. Langkawi will be an exceptional place for car renting service and can GoCar stand out?

    1. Heya Vince, brilliant question! We pride ourselves as a 24/7 car sharing/ car rental service so that means, you may book an available car and pick it up whenever. In terms of competing with other airport car rentals, we are the cheapest!

As for Langkawi, members are rest assured that insurance is provided and all cars are licenced for.

    1. Hi Kok Khian, thanks for reaching out and I believe my colleague is calling you at the moment to walk you through. From our preliminary check, we believe that you have ended your session once you have started it. Hence, you will not be able to extend nor see our helpline number. Don’t worry. My colleague will be able to help you out. =)

  3. Can I book the car at one point and return to other point. Take for example: I pick up from Balakong then I return it at Kota Damansara.

    1. Hi Christopher, thanks for reaching out. For now, GoCar will need to be returned to the same location where you picked it up from. It is in our plan to look into Point A – Point B drop off. We will definitely announce it when we launch. Have a great day!
