Since the bubble tea craze during the millennium, I’m sure we’ve seen many bubble tea shops come and go except the big 2, familiar to us as Chatime and Gong Cha, that seemed to be a national favourite. Years passed by and the trend has been noticeably stagnant until the recent legal drama that unfolds against Chatime in Malaysia. There’s probably no reason for you to go through the whole La Kaffa v. Loob Holdings episode unless you’re in your first year of LL.B. But if you really need to, here’s a great write-up by BurgieLaw.
Back to the main topic, Koi Thé has snuck its way into Kuala Lumpur and Malaysians who have tried Koi bubble tea overseas will understand the hype.
Started in 2006 where it first opened its doors in Taiwan, Koi has established its strong fan base ever since and later expanded to Singapore in 2011 as their first overseas store. To date, Malaysia would be one of the newest addition to their list of overseas branches after Myanmar.
I’ve made my way to Koi Thé in 1 Utama earlier last week and trust me, the hype is real. The queue was somewhat long but we love how they have 2 counters and each takes orders and payment respectively and it was soon my turn. Spent no time looking through the overhead menu and went straight with their all-time best seller, bubble milk tea with 70% sugar level. Prices are slightly on the steep side but who cares when you can get your Koi bubble tea fix now in KL?
The main key difference between Koi and other bubble tea here would be the golden tapioca pearls. The chewy golden pearls derived its colour from brown sugar and its size is noticeably smaller, making it even more pleasant to chew on.
First looks, their outlet here is relatively sizeable compared to the other bubble tea kiosks and have a decent seating area that could probably accommodate 25 patrons comfortably!
Last I’ve heard, KOI Thé in KLCC has recently opened too. If these 2 locations are a wee bit out of reach for you, they will be opening in Sunway Pyramid soon (Subang and PJ rejoice!).
